Hereford Whitefaces Make a Statement in Season-Opening Sweep Over Palo Duro

PALO DURO, Texas — The Hereford Whitefaces opened the 2026 volleyball season with a decisive road victory Tuesday, sweeping the Palo Duro Dons 3-0 in a match that became increasingly one-sided as the afternoon progressed.

Hereford posted set victories of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-9, establishing control early before pulling away in the final two sets.

The Whitefaces' performance was defined by offensive efficiency, disciplined serving and steady defensive play. After a competitive opening set, Hereford continued to separate itself from the Dons, closing the match with a dominant 16-point margin in the third set.

Mendoza, Thomas Lead Hereford Offense

Layla Mendoza and Teagan Thomas provided the primary offensive production for the Whitefaces, recording nine kills apiece.

Mendoza delivered one of the most efficient performances of the match, finishing with a .692 hitting percentage. She also contributed at the net with a block, giving Hereford production on both sides of the attack.

Maegan Hernandez added another efficient performance offensively, recording a .545 hitting percentage and one total block.

The combined production at the net allowed Hereford to maintain consistent pressure throughout the match.

Madrigal Provides All-Around Impact

Illiana Madrigal played a key role in directing the Whitefaces' attack while also contributing defensively.

Madrigal finished with 10 assists and eight digs, helping establish the offense while providing stability in the back row.

Her all-around performance was an important part of Hereford's ability to maintain momentum and limit Palo Duro's opportunities to establish a rhythm.

Valdez Creates Pressure From the Service Line

Hereford also received a strong serving performance from Kyndall Valdez, who recorded three aces controlling things from the service line,.

Her service pressure added another dimension to the Whitefaces' attack and helped Hereford control stretches of the match.

The most telling part of Tuesday's performance was the progression from set to set.

Hereford won the first set 25-20, followed by a 25-17 victory in the second. The Whitefaces then closed the match with a commanding 25-9 third-set performance, demonstrating their ability to make adjustments and finish.

For Palo Duro, the result dropped the Dons to 0-2 and extended their home losing streak to seven matches dating back to last season.
